In this year, to respond to the enormous expectation of the organizer, Akari-Lisa Ishii and Motoko Ishii, Art Directors of the thematic exhibition, selected some lighting materials exclusively (readymade or order-made, light source, luminous material, artistic applications, control technologies etc.) in order to demonstrate the « musts » to know and try for the targeted visitors and journalists, Under the sub-theme of “What’s lighting design?”.
Why this question?
- Because, despite what we may think, the profession is still unknown
- Because lighting design can bring a lot of value in interior design, including:
• realizing the desired ambience with a more optimized consumption;
• considerations about wellbeing using the new technology of light;
• integration of a refined quality light and optimization in a space;
• creation of a «story» through the various vocabularies of light project ... etc.
- Because the lighting designers have technical know-how and experimental projects to share with rest of the world of creation
- Because this approach allows the entire lighting industry to grow: expand the market, to design more suitable or more innovative products ...
The 6 spaces are titled as following:
1. “We, lighting designers, draw lighting objets.”
Lighting feature is one of the most eye-catching elements in a space. We often want to customize the lighting fixtures such as chandeliers and make a “beacon” of the project. We, lighting designers, applying the special know-how of different light materials and creativities, can create a custom-designed luminous objet from a scratch, or compose lighting structures integrated in the architecture.
In this introduction space, two interesting examples of special lighting objets are presented.

Lighting can tell a poem, with its various vocabulary, just like in the literature. Taking each light source as a letter, placing them in a sentence of space-time, according to a grammar regulation called electricity and optics. Personal touch could be added by playing in rhythm, contrast, colors, rhyme, echo… just like a poet does with words.
Here only light and shadow creates a panoramic light-scape in a artwork frame, who tells you a story of a day in the mountains.

You often buy a lamp by its physical color and shape. But when it’s turned on, sometimes you are disappointed because the light is too strong, too cold, to harsh etc. This is a typical trap of lighting fixture. As expert of lighting effect, we choose them by its optical efficiency such as color of white (so called “color temperature”), distribution on wall (“photometry”), glare (“luminance”), power (“illuminance”)… in order to obtain the required lighting effect and to create the aiming ambiance.
This demonstration is composed with very few lighting fixtures but with very significant and surprising effects to show this concept: linear-shaped down-lights in the ceiling make roundshaped beam on the floor (the dissociation of fixture and beam in terms of shape); only tiny fixture sharp beam lines surprisingly deform the space perception (the light defines the volume).

Lighting Human’s body has its own biological cycle called “circadian rhythm”. Recent researches indicates profound relationship between the light in the environment in which we live and the biological clock. Our ancestors spent millions of years according to the natural light, soft yellowish light in the morning, brighter white light at noon, then less and warm orange light in the late afternoon. Those who work under a high lighting level all day long tent to have a sleeping problem today.
This space proposes a series of lighting system innovation dedicated for the office and SOHO (small office home office) spaces, which automatically provides the most suitable lighting intensity and color according to the hour in a day and helps to regulate the circadian rhythm of the user of the space. Specific lights such as retrospective bulbs (but in LED!) could create divers ambiances in a same room.

Lighting design as profession started in 1930’s in the US as the needs to sublimate the new architectural style with glass walls. The main aim was to integrate the lighting fixtures in the construction as discretely as possible, yet to show up the space and structure as sublimely as possible. Thanks to the technical evolution, we dispose today variety of tools to provide the most suitable light to the required space and usage, with very few energy. In this room, only 1 type of lightings spots is presented, but with 3 different optical systems. Each of them are tuned up so to fit to the object that it’s lighting up. A demonstration laboratory of lighting beam and its controlling system to understand how easy but how efficiently this could be done by the latest technology.

Lighting world is under a big evolution these days. New light sources such as LED, OLED offer wider expressions and smarter applications thanks to color controlling system and optical accessories etc. Our mission as lighting designer covers to improve the lighting technology by testing them and giving constant feed-backs to the industry so that the world of lighting goes to the appropriate direction, in terms of efficiency, variety, and also esthetic. This section, separated into 3 zones, shows the most advanced lighting technologies applied into an artistic demonstrations and sculptures: Light artwork series in pyramidal shape sculptures; the metamorphose of light on bijoux by laser spot, the light source of the next generation; and the color light art installation.
